Middle Eastern Studies
Middle Eastern Studies focus on political, linguistic, religious and cultural issues in the region that stretches geographically from Afghanistan to Morocco, from Turkey to Sudan. The historical perspective spans from the Ancient Near East up until present day. The cultural perspective focuses on a world influenced by Egyptians and Babylonians, Jews and Greeks, Persians and Arabs, Turks and Kurds. The political perspective covers disparate regimes – from familial monarchies to military dictatorships.
Because of both its strategic location and its importance for several world religions, the Middle East has always played a key role in world development. It is a region of both linguistic diversity and cultural wealth. Current conflicts in the area are palpable – and tragic – examples of the region’s international significance.
Courses
Within Middle Eastern Studies there is an array of 7.5-credit courses offering a broad perspective of the societal situation in the region, through individual courses in language introductions, culture, religion, society and history of various parts of the region. Courses aim at providing a foundation for future studies within subjects related to the Middle East and lend themselves in particular to further study of one of the regional languages – such as Arabic, Persian or Turkish.
