Search the word database for information on word formation

As part of the processing of derivatives and expressions a simple analysis of lexemes into word elements is performed (after the pattern used in Oxford Latin Dictionary). The results of this analysis are registered in the database.
It is consequently possible to search the database for prefixes and suffixes, which appear in word formations found in ancient Latin, in Medieval Latin and in Neo-Latin. Verbs, nouns, adjectives etc., from which other words can be said to have been derived are also searchable.

Dictionary

The database can be consulted as a dictionary.
On the basis of the single lexeme, it is possible to retrieve information on declination/conjugation, word formation, occurrence on a diachronic scale, and a set of definitions (founded on the use of the word in Swedenborg's Oec. and RA).
On the basis of a chosen definition, information can be retrieved on whether a certain meaning is associated with a specific discipline (technical sense), and on the occurrence of this meaning on a diachronic scale. Examples brought from Oec. (and RA; sometimes from other works by Swedenborg), but also from other authors, are given.

Search for words in sense texts

Given an expression, e.g. a part of a word or a multiword expression, search for a sense text where this expression is included.

Search the word database for information on multiword terms
Multiword terms (=MWT), where two or more words together form a recurring technical expression are registered separately in the database.
Some of these terms were fixed and in regular use in the technical language of a certain discipline by Swedenborg's time (this goes for many anatomical terms like medulla spinalis, corpus callosum etc., but also for expressions like Regnum vegetabile, which is recognised as a MWT in the natural sciences). Some of them were obviously ad hoc terms used by Swedenborg only and in a certain context, but nevertheless they are recurring terms with a technical sense in this material.
Two main types of MWTs have been recognized: hypotactic and paratactic MWTs. Hypotactic stands for terms consisting of a headword with qualifier (usually an adjective, cf. corpora striata, or a noun in the genitive case, cf. cortex cerebri). MWTs consisting of two or more nouns in the same case (cf. mundus et natura), or verbs have been classified as paratactic.
As it appears, most of the MWTs registered here are not found in the preserved texts from earlier periods. They are neologisms in Neo-Latin. In those cases where instances from earlier periods have been found, this has been noted in the database, however.
Here you can search the database for MWTs (hypotactic, paratactic or both), MWTs which are or are not neologisms in Medieval and/or Neo-Latin.
