Mime, literature and Romanticism: The Case of Deburau
The modern image of the theatrical Pierrot role was created by Jean-Gaspard Deburau and the Romantic movement. This poses a number of questions for theatrical and literary history. Is there such a thing as ‘popular Romanticism’, or is Romanticism the concern of elite art and artists? Was mime in popular theatre an influence on physical acting in elite theatre? Why did high-profile writers and intellectuals such as Gautier, Sand, Janin and Nodier promote so concertedly a single actor, Deburau, from a poor, working class Boulevard theatre, the Théâtre des Funambules? In what way is a non-verbal stage art like mime related to the verbal arts ? And the visual arts? What, in fact, constituted ‘mime’ in this period, and was Deburau’s mime different? Understanding the mime art of Deburau and the performances at his theatre elucidates the artistic and more generally aesthetic changes happening in this period. Institutionen för moderna språk.
