Workshop

The Literary Paratext

Paratexts – including dust jackets, dedications, indexes, illustrations, blurbs, marginalia, maps, and fan fictions – are an indispensable part of the technology and experience of reading. Since the publication of Gerard Genette’s landmark study Paratexts: Thresholds of Interpretation (1987; trans. 1997), these “borderlands of the text†have become an object of intense attention for critics, who have used them to rethink the relationship between narrative form, modes of publishing, and book materiality. In this half-day workshop for students, teachers, and researchers, three specialists in this field will demonstrate how analysis of the function of paratexts in novels, plays, and poetry can generate compelling new insights.
