William Germano

The Archive of Information and the Archive of Ideas

William Germano is professor of English literature at the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York, where he served as dean of humanities and social sciences for eleven years. Before becoming a member of the faculty, he served as vice-president and publishing director at Routledge New York and, earlier, editor-in-chief at Columbia University Press. During almost thirty years in scholarly publishing he worked with major and emerging figures from Europe and North America, both first-time authors and such thinkers as Judith Butler, Jacques Derrida, Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick, Gilles Deleuze, Edward Said, Julia Kristeva, Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, bell hooks, Jack Zipes, James Elkins, Marjorie Garber, Stephen Greenblatt, Stephen Orgel, Paul de Man, and Cornel West. He has written two books on writing and publishing, Getting It Published: A Guide for Scholars and Anyone Else Serious about Serious Books (3rd ed. 2016, U Chicago Press) and From Dissertation to Book (2nd ed. 2013, U Chicago Press), as well as two books of cultural criticism, The Tales of Hoffmann (2013, British Film Institute) and Eye Chart (2017, Bloomsbury). His current projects are two: a book on revising academic prose, and a history of operatic adaptations of Shakespeare's plays. Contact person: Julie Hansen
