What Was Narrative? Introducing Historical Narratology

What is historical narratology and why do we need it? Which problems does it address, which methods does it draw on? Who are the key proponents in the field, and what are their main tenets? How is historical narratology connected with ‘narrative theory’ more generally, and with modern critical theory? This lecture attempts to answer these questions by providing an overview of the history and the status quo of historical narratology and argues for the importance of historicising our critical parameters. Dr Eva von Contzen is Junior Professor of English literature at the University of Freiburg and the principal investigator of the ERC-funded project “Lists in Literature and Cultureâ€. She earned her PhD at Freiburg University in 2012, and her dissertation The Scottish Legendary. Towards a Poetics of Hagiographic Narration, was published at Manchester University Press in 2016. She is already an established name in the field of narratology and is currently co-editing the volume Handbuch Historische Narratologie (forthcoming). Contact person: Uffe Holmsgaard Eriksen
