The History of the Novel and Fictionality (Uppsala University)

Workshop

Organizer: Uffe Holmsgaard Eriksen uffe_holmsgaard.eriksen@lingfil.uu.se The idea behind this workshop is to bring together young scholars working on different approaches to the novel – from Antiquity to Modernity. Simona Zetterberg Gjerlevsen has recently argued (in “A Novel History of Fictionalityâ€, Narrative 2016) that the rise of the (modern) novel in the eighteenth century is closely linked with experiments in the use of fictionality. She understands fictionality as an intended and signalled use of invention in communication. What does this claim entail for narratives written before the rise of the modern novel, e.g. the Greco-Roman novels, the Byzantine novels or French romance from the medieval period? Do we see similar experiments with fictionality in these pre-modern texts? After the workshop, we continue with a screening of the movie OndÅ™ej Cikán’s movie Menandros and Thaïs, which is an adaptation of his novel with same title. The story is inspired by the Greek novels. Cikán will do a short presentation of the movie Program 13.15-13.55 Claire Rachel Jackson (Cambridge University) “Fictional Histories and Histories of Fiction in the Ancient Novel†13.55-14.35 Aglae Pizzone (University of Southern Denmark) “Content or Form?
