Postcolonial Theory, Southeast Asia, and “the Chinese Questionâ€

Abstract: This lecture examines the limits of postcolonial theory in terms of both its Anglo-Franco focus and what the European colonisers called "the “Chinese question†in Southeast Asia. It will connect “the Chinese question†as the question of Chinese minorities—or Sinophone communities--to Southeast Asia’s historical relationship to the gigantic country to its north, China, and argue for an inter-imperial approach to postcolonial studies. Bio: Shu-mei Shih is a professor of Comparative Literature, Asian Languages and Cultures, and Asian American Studies at UCLA, and the Hon-yin and Suet-fong Chan Professor of Chinese at the University of Hong Kong. Her book, The Lure of the Modern: Writing Modernism in Semicolonial China, 1917-1937 (2001), is considered the authoritative study of Chinese literary modernism to date, and her Visuality and Identity: Sinophone Articulations across the Pacific (2007) inaugurated a new field of study called Sinophone Studies. She has also edited or co-edited several significant books, including Minor Transnationalism (2005), The Creolization of Theory (2011), Comparative Racialization (2008), Sinophone Studies: A Critical Reader (2013), and Comparatizing Taiwan (2014).
