Reading and Translating the Indian Poet Kunwar Narain (1927-)

Kunwar Narain – India's preeminent literary figure and author of several acclaimed poetry collections, short- stories, literary criticism, and translations, is considered the most highly regarded Hindi poet alive today. His epic poems, rooted in philosophy and mythology, are classics of Indian literature. Translated and honoured nationally and internationally, his many awards include the highest honour of India's Academy of Letters across all languages and genres, the SÄhitya AkademÄ«'s Senior Fellowship; the civilian honour Padma BhÅ«shan; and India's literary 'Nobel' - the JnÄnpÄ«th. His son and translator into English, Apurva Narain, will introduce the poet and his work, and read selected poems in the Hindi original and in English translation - both earlier as well as newer translations. Heinz Werner Wessler will present the author’s most recent epical poem - ‘Kumarjá¿‘v’. They will touch on the overall context of contemporary Indian literature, as well as the experiences and challenges of translation, and include a discussion.
