Nonconscious Cognition: Expanding the Mind of the Humanities

N. Katherine Hayles is an international authority on the relationship between science, literature, and technology. Her most recent scholarship focuses on the relations between human and posthuman, embodiment and materiality, and digital literature. Her books include The Cosmic Web: Scientific Field Models and Literary Strategies in the Twentieth Century (1984); Chaos Bound: Orderly Disorder in Contemporary Literature and Science (1990), How We Became Posthuman: Virtual Bodies in Cybernetics, Literature and Informatics (1999), Writing Machines (2001), My Mother Was a Computer: Digital Subjects and Literary Texts (2005), Electronic Literature: New Horizons for the Literary (2008), and How We Think: Digital Media and Contemporary Technogensis (2015). The lecture is organized by the American Literature section at the Department of English with support from LILAe.
